The Cookham Bridge Company was a statutory company established by 1 Victoria cap. X, to build and maintain a bridge across the River Thames, in lieu of a ferry which formerly ran from Cookham in Berkshire to Wooburn in Buckinghamshire. A timber bridge was constructed in 1844, but this required frequent repair and was replaced by an iron one in 1867. The company derived the bulk of its income from tolls levied on traffic using the bridge, such tolls becoming increasingly unpopular in the 20th century. In accordance with a general policy of replacing toll bridges over the Thames by public bridges, the bridge was purchased by Berkshire and Buckinghamshire County Councils in 1947, and the company was wound up. |
