TitlePapers relating to efforts to save Bulmershe Manor [formerly Old Bulmershe Court], Woodley.
Description(In 1930 the Reading Corporation owned the remains of Bulmershe Manor and the surrounding land and wished to demolish the house. An appeal to save the house was launched and a Bulmershe Manor Committee was formed but disbanded when they decided the fight was hopeless. However, Willcocks continued to write to the corporation and with the help of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and other individuals he was successful. After a year's fight the previous owner Mr Budd was allowed to buy back the house on the condition that he renovated it. The renovated building included pieces from the recently pulled down Billingbear Park and Caversham Court. After the manor was renovated it was sold to Mr Green in 1936.
The file includes correspondence, 1930-1936; copies of letters to newspapers and speeches by Willcocks; agenda for a meeting of the Bulmershe Manor Committee, 1930; a rough plan of the manor, 1930; newspaper articles, 1930-1936; and photographs of the manor before renovation, 1930.)
