Admin History | John Wernham (1839-1932) was the son of Chieveley farmer Richard (d.1874) and Ann, nee Fuller (1799-1880). By 1863 John was a master builder/carpenter and wheelwright in Newbury. In 1862 he married Sarah Buckeridge of Newbury (1839-1883). Their children were Lucy Anne (1863-1903), John Ernest (b. 1864) , Alice Sarah (1866-), Kate (1867-1953), Jessie (b. 1868), and George (b. 1870). John later moved to New Cross, Kent (by 1883), and then to Plumstead in the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich (by 1898, and was still there in 1924). By February 1926 he was living in Brighton, where he died in 1929. John’s nephew Bruce Wernham (1906-1999), was a leading historian and Oxford don, acting as editor of various Public Record Office [later The National Archives] record series.
Another cousin, Dorothy Wernham, married the exiled Pole Colonel Jerzy (later known as George) Kaminski in 1947. |
