Admin HistoryThe firm of Day, Shergold & Herbert, auctioneers, valuers, surveyors, estate agents, and insurance company agents was established by J.N. Day in 1889. An early partnership existed with a Mr Porter (extant in 1917), which was subsequently replaced by one with Leonard Shergold. Regular auctions of eggs and poultry started in 1916 in the open market, and in 1918 a room at the rear of the firm's offices in Newbury Market Place was used as a covered market. An extension in the scope of the auctions coincided with the 1926 building of the auction rooms in the Market Place. In 1931 Alfred Herbert became the third partner, and the firm was henceforth known as Day, Shergold & Herbert. It was later known as Shergold's, this name being retained after the firm was taken over in 1987 by Hogg Robinson. Produce sales ceased in 1987, and furniture auctions in 1988.
