| Admin History | The amateur dramatic group was founded in 1947 as the Wokingham Players. Initially they performed at the Masonic Hall in Reading Road, Wokingham, moving to Church House in 1953, the Town Hall in 1956, and the Baptist Church Schoolroom in 1957. In 1957 members decided the group needed a building of its own. A prefab Army building was transported to the site (in Norreys Avenue) in sections between 1959 and 1961 and it opened as Wokingham Theatre in 1962. The theatre was formally named the Wokingham Theatre in 1966. Their season run from 1 September -31 August.
A junior group called the Young Players catered for under-18s from 1964. Another new theatre was built in 1985 at Twyford Road, in the Cantley area of Wokingham, and opened in 1986. The Norreys Avenue building was demolished and the site developed for housing. Also in 1986 Wokingham Theatre became a limited company with charitable status. |
