Admin HistoryIntroduction

The school was a small private school for boys and girls in Wokingham. It was founded in 1890 by Miss Laura Baker (1867-1958), who had previously worked in the town as a private governess. It was named Grosvenor House School after Grosvenor House in Bath, where Miss Baker had trained as a teacher. It was initially based in Milton Road, with seven pupils, and in 1893 moved to latrger premises in Terrace Point, Wokingham. In 1919 the school moved again, to Montague House, Broad Street. Initially a wide age range was accepted, but in 1929 all girls over 11 moved to the newly opened The Holt School. Boarding ceased to be offered in 1930. In 1931 the school moved again, to premises in Albert Road. In 1939 it was renamed Wokingham Preparatory School; by this date it educated boys under seven and girls under 11. In 1948 the school moved again to The White House, and was renamed the White House School. It closed in July 2012.
