TitleGuild of the Good Shepherd
Description[The Guild of the Good Shepherd was formed in 1876 as the Society of the Holy Innocents for Anglican women teachers, initially as a guild for the help of teaches in the Wantage area. It was reorganised in 1895 and named the Guild of the Good Shepherd. There were a number of local branches, and also individual members, some overseas. By the 1920s there were overseas branches, mainly in British colonies, where members were predominantly non-white: Poona, India, was formed in 1924, North Nyasaland in Africa in 1926, Sandakan, Borneo, in 1930, South Nyasaland in 1937, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1938, and Jamaica in 1941. By 1954 the overseas branches comprised Jamaica, Kuala Lumpur, Msalabani (in Tanganyika) and North Nyasaland.
After the formation by some of its members of the Community of the Companions of Jesus the Good Shepherd, the Guild continued for those not wishing to make as full a commitment to the religious life. Sisters of CSMV acted as Sisters Superior and the Companions and later Sisters of CJGS took a leadership/support role in many branches. In 1932 the Guild absorbed the similar (but smaller) Society of the Holy Name. It was disbanded in December 1972.]
