Admin HistoryJames Randall (1790-1873) was born in Compton, Hampshire, and educated at Winchester College and Trinity College, Oxford. He was an assistant master at Rugby School, 1813-1815, and then became a barrister. In 1821 he married Rebe Lowndes, sister of a fellow barrister with whom he shared chambers. He decided in 1827, after several years' deliberation, to take holy orders, and was ordained deacon in 1828 and priest in 1829. He was a curate at Wotton, Surrey, 1828-1830; chaplain to the Lord Chancellor (a cousin of his wife), 1830-1831; and rector of Binfield from 1831 until 1859. He remained living at Binfield for the rest of his life, as he was succeeded in the living by his son in law. In addiiton, in 1846 he was appointed a chaplain to Samuel Wilberforce, the Bishop of Oxford, a post he retained after Wilberforce's translation to the see of Winchester, and until Wilberfirce's death in 1873. From 1855 to 1869 Randall was a very active Archdeacon of Berkshire.
