| Admin History | The society was formed in 1966 as a breakway from East Reading Horticultural Society (for whose records see D/EX1482). From 1969 activities were based at Woodford Park. The society purchased plants, seeds, gardening supplies, etc, for members to buy at their Trading Centre, and there was an annual horticultural show. At its peak the society had 2000 members.
The Trading Centre's profits were hit by the Sunday Trading Act allowing garden centres to open on Sundays. Membership and income fell in the 21st century. The society closed in 2011, with the last show being held in July 2010 and trading ceasing in October 2010. |
