Admin HistoryThe very early history of Scouting in Berkshire has yet to be unravelled, but the memories of older men in Crowthorne at least, in 1980, stretched back to the period before the First World War, and Scouting was active in Crowthorne by 1910.
Initially south east Berkshire was divided into two Scout Associations: Ascot and Bracknell. During the First World War both were managed by Miss Clowes, and in October 1920 they were amalgamated as the South East Berkshire District. At this date there were about 200 boys in the new District. By 1930 the number had risen to 300, and by 1939 to 600.
Some troops closed in the difficult conditions of the Second World War when leaders were called up, while evacuated troops appeared at short notice and took time to integrate.
In 1943 the district was divided, with South East Berkshire comprising Ascot, Bracknell and Sunninghill, and South Berkshire comprising Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Eagle House School, Wellington College and the evacuated St Paul's School. They continued to share a District Commisisoner and Executive Committee, and South Berkshire did not have its own Warrant.
There was further disruption after the end of the war. In 1950 the two districts were recombined as South East and South Berks. Following the growth of Bracknell and creation of the New Town, the district was split again in 1980. This time each district was self sufficient with its own DC and District Executive.
In splitting the District the resources held by the old District were similarly divided. South Berks took on organisation of the Gang Show which continued to be run successfully as a joint venture with plenty of support from both Districts. South East Berks had the Scout Shop and Earleywood Campsite in South Ascot. After many years of being a District site its development and operation was taken over by Berkshire County Scout Council when they wanted to create the County Training Centre and the District had insufficient funds to develop the site. The new training centre was officially opened by the Chief Scout in 1994. It subsequently returned to the joint management of the South and South East Berkshire Districts.
The archive was initially gathered together without great concern for provenance, so may include some material from the later South East District. It was originally catalogued by the Scouts, but has now been recatalogued according to a more archival scheme.
