Description[Sydney Spencer (c.1889-1918) was the fifth son of William Spencer senior. At one time teaching (and accoridng to the 1911 census studying for the Anglican ministry) at Epsom, Sydney Spencer went up to Oxford in 1914 and then joined up in the First World War. He fought in Europe, being awarded the Military Cross and was killed in action at Epehy in September 1918. His early diaries give a very full picture of his life at Epsom and with his family at Cookham. He was known in the family as Syd, Higgy or Hingy.]
