Description[Gilbert Spencer (1892-1979) was the youngest son of William Spencer senior. Like his brother Stanley, who was just a year older, he was an accomplished artist, and he also served with Stanley in the RAMC during the First World War. Mainly a landscape painter, and an official war artist during the Second World War, he was Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art, 1932-1948, Head of the Department of Painting at Glasgow School of Art, 1948-1950, and Head of Painting at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, 1950-1957.]
