| Admin History | Sandleford Hospital was established in 1948, using the buildings of the former Newbury Union Workhouse (see G/N).
It was run in conjunction with the Newbury District Hospital (see D/H 4), but in its first years also continued to have a role in the administering of poor relief, particularly for vagrants. (See Land, Lowe & Whiteside, The Development of the Welfare State (HMSO 1992), p. 35.)
Records dating from before 1948 originate from the Poor Law Institution.
It closed in 2004 and was replaced by West Berkshire Community Hospital [see P/HA7]. |
