Admin History | The charities' area comprised the whole of the historic parish of Thatcham, including Cold Ash, Greenham and Midgham. By 1958 the Thatcham Parochial Charities consisted of the charities of Richard Bye (founded in 1585), George James Fyfield (founded in 1943), John Heardman (founded in 1554), John Hunt, Thomas Loundyes or Loundres (founded in 1446), John Sargood (founded in 1826), John Winchcombe (founded in 1605); and the Nine Shilling Houses Charities. A Scheme of 1958 regulated them together with the Church Estate Charity. Loundye's and Hunt's Charities were for almshouses, situated at 47 Chapel Street and 44-47 Broadway respectively. Hunt's Almshouses were demolished in 1978 and replaced by new flats forming an extension to Loundye's Almshouses in 1990. The Nine Shilling Houses at 22-28 Chapel Street were also used as almshouses until c.1967. |
