Admin History[The Rural Deanery of Abingdon was created by John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury in 1812. It originally comprised the following parishes: Abingdon St Helen and St Nicholas, Appleford, Appleton, Besselsleigh, Cumnor, Drayton, Fyfield, Garford, North and South Hinksey, Kennington, Kingston Bagpuize, Longworth, Marcham, Radley, Sunningwell, Sutton Courtenay, Little and Long Wittenham, Wootton and Wytham. After the Deanery of the Vale of White Horse (see D/RDV) was separated from the Deanery of Abingdon in 1860, Abingdon Rural Deanery consisted of the parishes of Abingdon, Appleton, Besselsleigh, Culham (Oxfordshire), Cumnor, Fyfield, North and South Hinksey, Hinton Waldrist, East and West Ilsley, Kingston Bagpuize, Longworth, Marcham, Milton, Radley, Steventon, Sunningwell, Sutton Courtenay, Tubney, Long Wittenham, and Wytham. Oddly, the first meeting was held in East Hendred, outside the Deanery, but subsequent meetings were in Abingdon and, from 1870, in Long Wittenham and other parts of the Deanery.]
