Admin HistoryNewbury & Community Primary Care Trust was established in April 2001 as part of the national reorganisation of the National Health Service, taking over responsibilities from parts of West Berkshire Priority Care NHS Trust, Newbury Primary Care Group, and Berkshire Health Authority. Its role was to commission primary, community and secondary health services from various providers within the NHS, throughout West Berkshire. Until 2011 it provided community health services directly. It funnelled funding to local GP and NHS dental surgeries, and financed the prescription service, district and school nurses. It also ran Newbury District Hospital and Sandleford Hospital, and from 2004 their successor, West Berkshire Community Hospital. The Trust was abolished in 2013 under the terms of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
In 1987 a bequest by Miss Rosemary Rooke of Wash Water provided funds to be used for building at Newbury District Hospital. A trust was established for this purpose in 1996 (the Newbury & Thatcham Hospital Building Trust). West Berkshire Priority Care Trust (later Newbury and District Primary Care Trust) had acquired a site at Turnpike, Newbury, and in 2002 work began on building the new West Berkshire Community Hospital.
West Berkshire Community Hospital at Benham Hill, Newbury, opened in 2004 as a replacement for Newbury District Hospital and Sandleford Hospital. Some services were provided by the Berkshire Heathcare NHS Foundation Trust, others by the Royal Berkshire NHS Healthcare Trust.
The trust’s records include many items inherited from predecessor authorities and institutions.
