DescriptionIn 1850 Reading Borough Corporation was constituted as a Local Board of Health, under provisions included in the Public Health Act 1848. It replaced the Paving and Lighting Commissioners, and inherited their responsibilities for public health matters, including the maintenance of streets, public cleanliness, water supply and sewerage, etc. It also incorporated the area of Whitley. For draft petition and memorial of rate payers requesting Reading to be brought under the act, 1849-1850, see D/EX 1459/1. In 1873 the council was instead constituted as an Urban Sanitary Authority.
