TitleDeeds of six messuages on the north side of Castle Street, Reading, 1662-1769, with related papers.
Description(Includes family settlement by Richard Fellowe of Reading, clothier, to provide for portions for his daughters and the maintenance of his wife Ann should she survive him, 1662; probate of the aforesaid Richard Fellowe, 1674 (will dated 1662); pedigree of the Fellowe family, n.d. [c.1716]; probate of Richard Wright of Reading, tobacco pipe maker, 1738; and marriage settlement of John Phillips of Camberwell, Surrey, farmer, and Elizabeth Barrett of Reading, spinster, 1739, whereby Phillips agrees he will have no interest in Elizabeth's property. Described as one messuage, 1662-1707. The additional houses, or subdivision, probably took place before 1730. Counterpart lease of 1730 lists the rooms of [one house], and includes the right for the lessee to dry his clothes on a grass plot near the house, and to use the well and the necessary house or 'bog house' nearby, in common with the lessor and other tenants. The 1738 probate refers to messuages (no number given). Specified as six messuages, 1767-1769. Includes sketch plan, 1769, showing three messuages fronting Castle Street, one (the furthest east) identified as the Castle [inn], with the other three at the rear, with sheds, gardens and a drying ground further back; with key to tenants. Also includes notice to owner of property in Castle Street of the proposed laying of a tramway in the street, 1899.)
