TitleBerkshire War Memorial Committee records
Description[The Berkshire War Memorial Committee was appointed at a general public meeting held in Reading Town Hall in 1919. The committee took over the existing Forbury Memorial Fund and Maiwand Memorial Fund, which contained money left over after erecting the Maiwand memorial lion. It intended to build a memorial in the Forbury Gardens, Reading, but plans for a winged figure of Victory and inscriptions of the names of 8-10,000 fallen soldiers from the county were too ambitious, and the project was abandoned in 1922. The committee was revived in 1931 at the urging of the Mayor of Reading, a veteran of the war, and Peter Ditchfield became a member. The memorial was unveiled in 1932.]
