Description(The earliest deed, dated 1634/5, is a bargain and sale of a capital messuage called Cattesgrove or Cattlesgrove [Katesgrove] in the parish of Reading St Giles; with 6 a. ground between Clackman Field and the orchard there, adjoining a ground called Wayball Hill; a ground called the Claypitt; and the dwelling house occupied by Richard Soane. Lease of 1675 for 11 years is of a plot of garden ground (2 1/2 a.) on the north side of Katesgrove Hill, adjoining Katesgrove Lane on the south and the River Kennet on the north; and a close or garden plot called Cherry Hill with pit adjoining the same [possibly the claypit mentioned in R/D32/1/1] (1 a.) at Katesgrove Hill, adjoining a passage or pathway leading to Katesgrove House on the east and Katesgrove Lane on the west. 1686 lease is of a messuage 'at Cattesgrove' [Katesgrove House], with a piece of arable or pasture ground called the Old Orchard (7 a.); a messuage and garden or orchard occupied by Giles Charleton; a messuage and orchard or close called the Sand Pitt (1 a.); and orchards called the Pitt Orchard and the Little Orchard; all at Katesgrove. 1700 counterpart lease is of an orchard and little piece of garden ground on the east side of the capital messuage called Cattlesgrove or Cottesgrove [Katesgrove], adjoining the footway from Katesgrove to Reading on the west. 1716 counterpart lease is of a messuage, tanyard, tanpits and other premises in Katesgrove Lane; and lease of 1722 is of an orchard on the south side of Katesgrove Lane.)
