Description | The borough court of record, also known as the mayor's court, was first granted by the charter of 1560 (R/IC1/8), altered by Charles I's charter of 1638 (R/IC1/10) (both charters available in translation in C Fleetwood Pritchard (ed), Reading Charters, Acts and Orders, 1253-1953 (1913), in BRO library . The court was held weekly and had jurisdiction to try civil cases up to the value of £10. Records are patchy. Cases were entered initially in the plaints book, and then in the corresponding court book, but neither series survives in full. |
