Description[Reading School was in existence before 1139. For much of the medieval period it was run in association with Reading Abbey, and it came under royal patronage after the Reformation. Elizabeth I's charter to the borough of 1560 (R/IC1/8) gave responsibility for the school to the mayor and burgesses, which they retained until the passing of the Reading School Act in 1867.]
