Description | [Rampton Hospital, Nottinghamshire, first opened in 1912, in order to relieve overcrowding at Broadmoor. Building work on the new asylum began in 1908, but it was not until 1 October 1912 that it was completed and the first patients were admitted. It was run as a branch of Broadmoor Hospital, managed independently, although their accounts were initially merged with those of Broadmoor , and the Superintendent of Broadmoor was the accounting officer. It closed in 1919 and was transferred by the Home Office to the Board of Control. It re-opened in 1920 as a state institution for 'mental defectives' [those with learning disabilities] with dangerous and violent propensities, owned and managed by the Board of Control under the Mental Deficiency Act 1913. Thereafter Rampton was managed as a Special Hospital, and followed a similar pattern of management changes to Broadmoor. It is now part of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. Its records after 1920 are held by the hospital.] |
